Code of Virginia

In Virginia, Your Hazard Lights Buy You Room

The state's move over law, Va. Code 46.2-861.1, comes in two parts. The first covers stopped vehicles with flashing blue, red or amber lights, and tow trucks are among the vehicles allowed amber lights. On a highway with at least four lanes, two each way, drivers coming up on one must change to a lane that isn't next to it when that's reasonable and safe. If they can't, they must pass with due caution at a safe speed. Breaking that part counts as reckless driving.

The second part puts the same duty on drivers passing a stopped car that has its hazard flashers on, caution signs set out or lit flares. That's why the first thing to do when your car quits is turn on your flashers.

If the car still moves, nobody's hurt and you can do it safely, Va. Code 46.2-888 says to get it out of the flow of traffic, onto the shoulder as soon as possible and off the shoulder without needless delay. If a stalled car becomes a traffic hazard and isn't removed promptly, an officer can have it moved at the owner's expense. That's where a tow comes in.

Mountains, cities and the bay

Four Interstates, Four Different Drives

I-81 is the longest interstate in the state. It runs northeast from the Tennessee line at Bristol, past Roanoke, Salem, Lexington, Staunton and Harrisonburg, to the West Virginia line near Winchester.

I-77 crosses the southwest mountains in just 67 miles, through the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel and the East River Mountain Tunnel at the West Virginia line. Near Fancy Gap, fog and wind have led to deadly pileups.

I-64 links Richmond with Hampton Roads, where it crosses the harbor on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, a 3.5-mile mix of bridges, trestles, man-made islands and tunnels between Hampton and Norfolk.

I-95 runs north and south through Richmond, where it shares a stretch with I-64.

On any of them, a partner can handle a flat, a dead battery or an empty tank with fuel delivery.

Virginia Weather and Questions

Between December and March, cold air trapped by the Appalachians can set up heavy snow across the state. Thunderstorms are common from April to September, mostly in late afternoon and evening.

Snow is coming. What should I have in the car?

A charged phone, a warm layer and a full tank go a long way. If you do get stuck, stay with the car, turn on your flashers and call. If you slid off but the car isn't damaged, a winch-out may be all it takes.
