Barrie tow truck help

Towing in Barrie: The 400 Trench, the Split and Bayfield Street

Barrie wraps around the west end of Kempenfelt Bay, about 90 km north of Toronto. Highway 400 cuts right through it. So the first thing we ask is simple: are you on the 400, or on a city street?

The 400 inside the city

Through Barrie, the 400 sits in a trench below street level for most of its length, curving around downtown to the northeast. There's nowhere to walk down there. Get onto the right shoulder, hazards on, and stay buckled in. Tell us the last interchange you passed, like Essa Road, Dunlop Street or Duckworth Street. There are plans to widen this stretch to 10 lanes, and the Dunlop Street overpass is set to be replaced for it.

The 400 and 11 split

On the north edge of town, the straight-ahead lanes turn into Highway 11 toward Orillia. The 400 peels off on a ramp to the right, toward Georgian Bay. The junction is incomplete, so some drivers double back at Duckworth Street or use the Forbes Road and Penetanguishene Road interchanges. Not sure which highway you ended up on? Just say "near the split."

Highway 11 along Lake Simcoe

North of the split, 11 is a four-lane road with a median barrier. It's right-in, right-out, and turnarounds happen at special interchanges. A truck coming from the other direction may need one to reach you, so tell us northbound or southbound and the nearest side road.

Bayfield Street and Highway 26

Inside Barrie, Highway 26 is Bayfield Street. It's the road to Midhurst, Wasaga Beach and Collingwood, and it passes Georgian Mall about 1.5 km north of the 400. A car that won't crank in that lot usually needs a jump start, not a tow.

Off the highways, Barrie's major arterials include Mapleview Drive, Essa Road, Dunlop Street, Big Bay Point Road, Cundles Road and Duckworth Street. Downtown, streets come together at the Five Points intersection.

Georgian Bay snowbelt

Squalls That Can Close the 400

Barrie is in a snowbelt. From November to January, cold air passes over the warmer water of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and the snow comes down in squalls. The 400 near Barrie runs along the edge of that belt.

A squall can wipe out what you see ahead. On February 27, 2014, a squall with heavy gusts and near-zero visibility hit the 400 in Innisfil. A major pileup followed near Innisfil Beach Road. The highway stayed closed for a day, and buses were brought in to keep stranded drivers warm.

When the snow blinds you

  • Use low beams. Ontario's driver handbook says high beams reflect off the snow and make it harder to see.
  • Never stop in a driving lane. The handbook warns you could become the first link in a chain-reaction crash.
  • If visibility drops near zero, pull into a safe parking area if you can find one. A gas station or plaza lot beats the shoulder.
  • Stuck anyway? Stay in the car with your flashers on. Crack a window and run the engine only now and then.

Barrie Parking Bans, Plows and Your Tow Rights

Winter rules can leave a car buried or ticketed. Here's what the city and the province say.

Overnight street parking

From December 1 to March 31, you can't park on city streets from 12:01 to 7 a.m. In the downtown business area, the ban runs 3 to 6 a.m. The city can also call a Winter Maintenance Event outside those dates, and the ban applies then too. Read the overnight parking by-law.

When the plows roll

Crews head out on main and secondary roads at about 5 cm of snow, and on residential streets at about 8 cm. Side streets are kept snow-packed rather than bare, so grip stays poor for a while.

Who clears the highways

The province, not the city, handles the 400 and the two-lane highways around Barrie, like 26, 27 and 90.

Your consent to a tow

Unless police or another official started it, Ontario says a tow needs your consent. Don't sign a blank form. If they skip your consent, they can't charge you for the tow. The province lists the rest on its towing rights page.

Plowed in but not damaged? A winch-out is often all it takes. If the car has to go to a shop instead, you get the price by text before anyone is dispatched, and the bill can't go over it. That's part of the Stay-With-You Promise.

Areas We Cover Around Barrie

Barrie took in land from Innisfil in 2010 and from Springwater in January 2026. Sentinel covers the whole city and the towns around it.

  • Downtown, Five Points and the waterfront
  • Allandale and Minet's Point
  • Painswick, Holly and Ardagh Bluffs
  • Cundles, Letitia Heights, Crown Hill and Little Lake
  • Innisfil: Alcona, Stroud, Lefroy and Cookstown
  • Springwater: Midhurst, Minesing and Anten Mills
  • Oro-Medonte: Shanty Bay and Hawkestone
  • Angus, next to CFB Borden

Dead car at the GO station?

A car that sat all day at Allandale Waterfront or Barrie South GO in January may not start when you get off the train. Call from the platform. You'll get your driver's name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck from somewhere warm instead of pacing the lot.

Barrie Towing Questions

My car died on the 400 near Toronto. Can you tow it back to Barrie?

Not from inside the tow zone. The 400 from Highway 9 south to the 401 is a restricted tow zone, and only the tow company the province has under contract can move you there. If you're safe on the shoulder, call 511 for a tow. If you're stuck in a live lane, call 911. Once your car is outside the zone, you pick the company and the destination. See the province's tow zone page.

Can I leave my car on a Barrie street overnight in January?

No. From December 1 to March 31, on-street parking is banned from 12:01 to 7 a.m. across the city, and 3 to 6 a.m. downtown. If a plow buried your car in a driveway or lot instead, call us for a winch-out.

I'm on Highway 11 toward Orillia and my car quit. What do I tell you?

Your direction and the nearest side road. Highway 11 is right-in, right-out with a median barrier, so the truck has to come at you from your side. Knowing which way you face saves a detour.

Can you tow me from Innisfil or Midhurst to a shop in Barrie?

Yes. Tell us where the car is and where it should go. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of the car and we text you the photos. If it's safe and allowed, you can ride along in the tow truck.
