Hamilton's QEW Corridor and What It Adds to a Tow Price

In Hamilton, Ontario, the road you stopped on shapes your tow price before anything else. The QEW through the east end has only three interchanges, and it sits inside a provincial tow zone where a flat rate covers the first 10 km. The Linc and the Red Hill are city expressways with ramps close together, and you pick the company. Then distance, your vehicle and what went wrong do the rest.
Why is the QEW through Hamilton its own kind of tow job?
Inside Hamilton, the QEW runs almost entirely through an industrial park. You get just three ways on and off: Fifty Road, Fruitland Road and Centennial Parkway. Centennial is tangled up with the Red Hill Valley Parkway ramps. Past it, the highway swings onto Burlington Beach and climbs the Skyway.
So a car that quits between Fruitland and Fifty Road has long gaps on both sides. Here's what that means for the job:
- Fewer ramps. A truck on the wrong side has to run to the next interchange and come back. That's extra distance before your car is even hooked up.
- The shoulder is the work site. Loading beside highway traffic takes more care than loading in a plaza lot.
- A ramp beats the shoulder. If the car still rolls, coast to the next exit and stop on a side street near Winona or Stoney Creek. That's a simpler pickup.
What does the QEW tow zone do to my price?
Ontario runs restricted tow zones on busy highways. In those zones, only companies under contract with the province can move your car. Two of them touch Hamilton:
| Zone | Where it runs |
|---|---|
| 4C | The QEW from the 403 split to Fifty Road |
| 4B | The QEW and 403 from Third Line to the 403 at Highway 6 North |
Zone 4C covers the whole QEW corridor through the east end. If you're safe and need a tow there, call 511. If you're in a travel lane and can't move, call 911.
The province says breakdown tows in a zone use a flat rate, and that rate includes towing for 10 km. That's a short hop. It can get you off the highway, but maybe not to your own mechanic.
Here's the part that matters for cost. Once your car is outside the zone, you can choose the tow company and where the car goes, unless police tell you otherwise. If your shop is in Ancaster, Waterdown or on the Mountain, that second leg is a fresh job. Call us for it, and we'll text you a price before anyone is sent.
Is a tow on the Linc or the Red Hill priced differently?
It's a different setup. Neither road is on the province's tow zone list. You call a tow company directly, not 511, and you choose where the car goes.
The Linc
The Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway runs across the Mountain at 90 km/h, mostly down in a ditch. Ramps come often: Mohawk Road and Golf Links Road, Garth, Upper James, Upper Wentworth, Upper Gage, Dartnall and Mud Street. A driver can usually reach you from a nearby ramp, which keeps the pickup simpler than on the QEW.
The Red Hill
The Red Hill Valley Parkway is about 7 km of four-lane road at 80 km/h. It links the Linc to the QEW, with ramps at Mud Street and Stone Church, Greenhill, King, Queenston and Barton. The city cut the speed on the whole road to 80 km/h in 2021. Its notice says the northbound lanes have a downhill section where drivers and large trucks can find it hard to slow down. If your brakes feel soft on that grade, get to the right shoulder and stop.
The ditch on the Linc and the valley on the Red Hill leave little room to step away from traffic. Stay in the car with your belt on and hazards flashing while you wait.
Does it matter which side of the Mountain my shop is on?
Yes, and it's the most Hamilton thing about a tow price. The escarpment splits the city into upper and lower parts. A car that dies on the Linc near Upper James, headed for a garage in the North End, has to come down the escarpment. That means the Jolley Cut, the Claremont Access, the Sherman Access or the Kenilworth Access.
Tell us both addresses when you call. A shop on the same level as your car is often the shorter run. Some quick examples:
- Stuck on the QEW near Fruitland Road. A garage in Stoney Creek stays below the escarpment.
- Stuck on the Linc near Garth. A shop near Meadowlands in Ancaster stays up top.
- Stuck on the Red Hill near Greenhill. Either level can work, because the parkway runs between them.
In winter, the upper city gets more snow than the lower city. The city plows main routes and escarpment crossings first. After a storm, keep your car off the street if you can, so a dead one isn't in the plow's way.
What else moves a Hamilton tow price?
- Distance. A shop a few blocks off Centennial Parkway is a short trip. A garage out in Binbrook, Mount Hope or Waterdown is a longer one.
- What you drive. A small sedan hooks up fast. An all-wheel-drive SUV or a light pickup may need a flatbed.
- What went wrong. A battery that quits on a January morning may only need a jump start. Environment Canada's normals for the Hamilton airport at Mount Hope show a January average low of -9.3 C. A car that won't run at all needs a car tow.
- Where it's stuck. The same airport station averages about 156 cm of snow a year. A car that slid off a Mountain side street may only need a winch-out. One in an underground garage downtown needs a different truck.
Will road work change my tow route?
It can. The city closes the Linc for one weekend of maintenance each year. In 2025, both directions were shut for a full weekend, and detours ran along Mohawk Road and Stone Church Road. A detour adds distance for your driver, too.
The province also lists QEW jobs in Hamilton. Bridge repairs and resurfacing are planned from Centennial Parkway to the south end of the Skyway at Redhill Creek. Noise barriers are planned on the Toronto-bound side from Van Wagner's Beach Road to Renfrew. Both have a target of 2027 to 2028. A new Highway 5 and 6 interchange is planned in Hamilton as well. Check Ontario 511 for current closures before you drive.
Where does my car go after a fender bender?
Hamilton police no longer come out to crashes with property damage only. You start a report online, then finish it at a Collision Reporting Centre. Pick the one that fits your side of the city:
| Location | Phone | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| East End Station, 2825 King Street | 905-560-0510 | Mon to Fri 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; closed weekends |
| Mountain Station, 400 Rymal Road East | 905-385-2426 | Mon to Fri 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sat and Sun 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
Police ask you to come with your vehicle. If yours can't be driven, call that location first and ask what to do. Then plan the tow to the body shop as one trip, so your price covers the whole route. Our Hamilton tow truck rights guide covers what a driver must show you at the scene.
What do Ontario's rules say about the bill?
Every certified tow operator in Ontario has a maximum rate schedule. They must give it to you before they move your car, and they can't charge more. Fuel surcharges are banned. You see an itemized invoice before you pay. You can look up an operator's rates on the province's online portal. A tire change or battery boost isn't covered by these towing rules, so get a price before any roadside job, too.
How does Sentinel price a Hamilton job?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. A vetted local partner tow company does the work. Tell us the road, the direction, the last ramp you passed and where the car should go. We text your price before anyone is sent, and that price is locked. If the job changes, we text a new price first, and you decide. Then we check on you by text until help arrives. That's our Stay-With-You Promise, and you can track your truck on a map.

Hamilton Tow Cost Questions
Can I call any tow company if I break down on the QEW in Hamilton?
Not inside the tow zone. From the 403 split to Fifty Road, only companies under contract with the province can tow you. Call 511 if you're safe, or 911 if you're in a travel lane. Once the car is outside the zone, you choose who takes it from there.
How far does the tow zone flat rate take my car?
The province says the flat rate for a breakdown includes 10 km of towing. If your shop is farther than that, plan for a second leg.
Is the Red Hill Valley Parkway a tow zone?
No. The Red Hill and the Linc aren't on the province's tow zone list. You call a tow company directly and choose where your car goes.
Why does it matter if my shop is on the Mountain?
The escarpment splits Hamilton into upper and lower parts. A tow between them has to use one of the accesses, like the Jolley Cut or the Sherman Access. That can add distance, so give us both addresses when you call.
