What Changes a Tow Price Near Abbotsford, BC: Work Zones, Ramps and the Sumas Prairie

Near Abbotsford, a tow price comes down to how hard the job is to reach and how far your car goes. Highway 1 is a long work zone right now, with lane shifts, ramp changes and lower speed limits. The Highway 11 interchange is being rebuilt. And when the Sumas Prairie floods, roads can close. So two tows that look the same on a map can be very different jobs.
Why does Highway 1 construction change a tow job?
The province is widening Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley in phases. Coming from Langley, the highway drops to two lanes each way as it enters Abbotsford. That is the stretch being rebuilt.
Here is where the work stands, from the province's own project pages:
- 264th Street to Mt. Lehman Road. This is 13 km of work, and it is under construction. It adds truck climbing lanes, replaces the Bradner Road Overpass and improves the Bradner Rest Area.
- Mt. Lehman Road to Highway 11. This 8 km stretch is in design. Plans include a new Peardonville Road underpass and a longer westbound truck climbing lane near McCallum Road.
- The Highway 11 interchange. Crews are already building it. The province expects to finish in 2031.
A work zone makes a tow harder in plain ways. The shoulder may be narrow or gone. Concrete barriers can box a stalled car in. Your driver may need a safe spot to stop and load, and that spot may not be close to your car. None of this means a bad job. It just means a different one than a quiet side street in Clearbrook.
Can my driver just turn around?
Not on Highway 1. A truck heading the wrong way has to reach the next interchange and come back. In a work zone, ramps can be closed or moved. That loop adds road. So always tell us which way you were heading.
What is happening at the Highway 11 interchange?
Highway 11 is Sumas Way. It runs between the Mission Bridge and the Huntingdon border crossing, and it meets Highway 1 in the middle of town. That meeting point is the busiest part of the rebuild.
Two recent changes from the province matter if you break down nearby:
- The old loop ramp is gone. The loop from northbound Highway 11 onto westbound Highway 1 is closed for good. Drivers now use a new left turn lane at a temporary traffic signal.
- A weekend closure in October 2026. From 9 p.m. Friday, October 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, October 5, 2026, crews planned to take down the Highway 11 overpass. The new on-ramp from northbound Highway 11 to westbound Highway 1 was closed. Traffic was sent along Marshall Road and McCallum Road instead. Under Highway 1, Highway 11 dropped to one lane each way. The province said weather could shift those times. Check DriveBC for the latest closures.
During construction, the limit is 50 km/h on Highway 11 and 80 km/h on Highway 1. Lower speeds help your driver work. But a detour can still turn a short pickup into a longer drive. Check DriveBC before you head out. It also helps to know about closures before you call.
What should I say if I stall near the interchange?
Say if you're on Highway 1 or on Sumas Way. Say which way you were going. Name the nearest road you passed, like McCallum Road or Marshall Road. If you're at the temporary signal, say so. Those details tell your driver how to reach you, and they keep your price matched to the real job.
How does the Sumas Prairie change a tow price?
East of Highway 11, Highway 1 runs across the Sumas Prairie. It is flat, low farmland. In November 2021, the City of Abbotsford says the Nooksack River broke through its dike and flooded the prairie. The flood closed Highway 1 and the border crossing. More than 1,100 properties were evacuated.
On November 15, 2021, the province closed Highway 1 both ways between Highway 11 and No. 3 Road. The reason was a flood warning on the Sumas River. When a road like that closes, every trip around it gets longer. A tow from the prairie to a shop in town might need a long way around.
The province is still planning the next 18 km of Highway 1 through the prairie. It says the work has to fit a regional flood plan. So for now, this is still the low stretch that water can reach.
Should I wait for a tow if water is rising?
No. Never drive into water you can't see the road under. If your car stalls and the water is rising or moving, get out and get to higher ground if you can do it safely. Call 911 if you're trapped. Call for the tow once the water drops. A car can be towed later. You come first.
Does Abbotsford weather change the job?
Sometimes. Environment Canada's normals for the Abbotsford airport show a heavy rain day, 25 mm or more, on about 11 days a year. Fog shows up on about 27 days. Snow is rare here but can come down hard, around 55 cm a year in total.
Each one can change the job:
- Heavy rain. Wet ground off the shoulder can be soft. A car that slid onto grass may need a winch-out before it can be loaded.
- Fog. Your driver needs to see and be seen. A car on a fast, foggy stretch takes more care to set up around.
- Snow on the hills. A short street that climbs can be harder to reach in snow than a flat one in town.
Heading east toward the Fraser Canyon? B.C. doesn't require winter tires in many Lower Mainland areas. Outside the Lower Mainland, the province says they're required on most highways.
What else changes the price of an Abbotsford tow?
The roads are the local part. These count everywhere:
- Where the car goes. A shop near you, a dealer across town or your driveway in Mission over the Fraser. Pick it before you call.
- What you drive. A small car is a quick hookup. An all-wheel-drive SUV or a light pickup may need a flatbed.
- What went wrong. Ran dry on Highway 1? Fuel delivery may get you moving with no tow at all.
- Where it's stuck. A ditch, a muddy farm lane or a ramp shoulder each takes a different setup.
A quick tip: if your car can't be fixed tonight, a shop on your side of Highway 1 may make more sense than one across a closed ramp. You can move the car later.
How do I stay safe while I wait?
If anyone is hurt, or your car is stuck in a live lane, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service.
Otherwise, turn on your hazards. In a work zone with barriers, stay buckled in your seat. Get out only for smoke or fire, and only if you can reach a spot well away from traffic. When your driver arrives, B.C. law helps. Drivers passing a stopped tow truck with its lights on must slow to 70 km/h where the limit is 80 or more, or 40 km/h where it's lower. They must also change lanes when it's safe.
How does Sentinel set your price?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. You tell us where the car is, which way you were heading, what you drive and where it should go. We text your price before anyone is sent. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first, and you decide. Then we check on you by text until help arrives. That's the Stay-With-You Promise. You can also track your truck on a map.

Abbotsford Tow Price Questions
Does Highway 1 construction make my tow cost more?
It can change the job. Narrow shoulders, barriers and closed ramps can mean more setup or a longer loop to reach you. Your price is texted before dispatch, so you see it first. Tell us which way you were heading and the nearest road.
How do I get from northbound Sumas Way onto westbound Highway 1 now?
The old loop ramp is closed for good. The province says to use the new left turn lane at the temporary traffic signal. In October 2026 the new ramp also closed for a weekend while crews worked, with a detour by Marshall Road and McCallum Road. Check DriveBC before you go.
Can you tow my car from the Sumas Prairie to a shop in town?
Yes, when the roads are open. Tell us the shop, and we text you a locked price first. If water is rising, get to higher ground and call 911 if you're trapped. Call for the tow after the water drops.
Can my price change after the truck shows up?
Not without your OK. Your price is locked by text before dispatch. If the job turns out different, we text a new price first, and you decide.
