What the East Beltline Adds to a Tow Price in Grand Rapids

On Grand Rapids' East Beltline, the biggest thing that moves a tow price is distance: how far your car rides from where it stopped to the shop you pick. The Beltline runs along the east edge of town, so a shop on the west side means a long haul. Which side of I-96 you're on, how the car sits and what went wrong also count. You get the exact price by text before anyone is sent.

What goes into the price of a tow on East Beltline?

Every tow is priced by the job in front of it. On the Beltline, these are the parts that matter most:

  • The haul. The miles from your car to the shop or home address you choose.
  • The trip to reach you. How far your driver goes to get to your side of the road.
  • Where the car sits. A mall lot, a turn lane, a ramp or a snowbank all load differently.
  • What went wrong. A car that won't move at all is a different job than a dead battery.
  • What you drive. A small sedan and an all-wheel-drive pickup need different setups.

None of these are secret. If you know them before you call, you can shape the price yourself.

Where does East Beltline run, and why does that matter?

East Beltline Avenue starts at 28th Street in Kentwood. South of there, the same road is called Broadmoor Avenue. From 28th Street it heads north past Woodland Mall and Centerpointe Mall. Then it passes Calvin University and the east end of Reeds Lake. It crosses Fulton Street and meets I-96 at exit 38.

North of I-96 the Beltline keeps going. It passes Frederik Meijer Gardens and Cornerstone University. Offices and shops line it up to Knapp Street, then it turns into homes. At Plainfield Avenue it crosses the Grand River.

The road has two state route numbers. South of I-96, it's M-37. North of I-96, it's M-44. From 28th Street up to I-96 alone is about 4 miles. So "I'm on the Beltline" could mean a lot of places. Tell us the cross street.

Why can an East Beltline tow price higher than one downtown?

Mostly because of where your shop is. Say your car quits on US 131 on the S-Curve, between Wealthy Street and Pearl Street. That's right downtown. Many drop-off spots are a short trip from there.

Now say it quits on the Beltline near Knapp Street. Your favorite garage is across town on the west side. The truck and the hookup are the same as downtown. The miles are not. The car has to ride across the whole city first.

The reverse is true too. If you live in Kentwood and your shop is on 28th Street, a Beltline breakdown near the malls may be a short haul. The road itself doesn't set the price. The trip does.

Does it matter which side of the road you're on?

It can. The Beltline is a four-lane divided boulevard for much of its length. Your driver may come from the other direction. Then they need a legal place to turn and come back to you. That loop adds a little to the trip to reach you. When you call, say which way you were headed, like "northbound past Fulton."

How will the I-96 bridge project change Beltline tows?

MDOT and the City of Grand Rapids plan to replace the East Beltline bridge over I-96. The state lists preliminary work for fall 2026. The main construction runs April to November 2027.

During that 2027 work, MDOT says East Beltline will be closed over I-96. The exit ramps stay open for most of the project. Some entrance ramps will close, including the ramp to eastbound I-96. I-96 itself will close on some weekends for short spells, while crews tear down the old bridge and set the new beams.

Here's why that matters for price. If the bridge is closed, a truck can't just drive straight across from the north Beltline to the south Beltline. Your driver has to go around. A car that dies north of I-96, headed to a shop near 28th Street, may ride farther than it would today. Your price is set for the trip your driver actually has to make.

Before you head out, check Mi Drive. It shows MDOT construction, incidents and live cameras.

Does the state's free freeway patrol cover the Beltline?

No. MDOT runs a Safety Service Patrol in Kent County at no cost to drivers. It covers set stretches of US 131, I-96 and I-196. That I-96 stretch runs from Fruit Ridge Avenue to M-50, so it passes the Beltline interchange. But the Beltline itself isn't on the list.

Also, you can't call the patrol. MDOT says it is not on demand and has no phone number. So if your car dies on the boulevard, plan to call for a tow or roadside help yourself.

Can you leave the car on the Beltline and come back later?

Not for long. East Beltline is a state route, M-37 or M-44 depending on where you are. Michigan law calls a car abandoned after 18 hours on a state trunk line highway, if it has a valid plate. On other public property, the limit is 48 hours. After that, police can tag it and have it towed.

An impound tow is a separate cost, and it adds a trip to get the car back. Sentinel doesn't do impounds. Getting your own tow early is usually the simpler path.

What if it was a fender bender?

If no one is badly hurt and the car still drives safely, Michigan law says to move it out of the traffic lanes. A shoulder, a side street or a parking lot all work. Not moving it is a civil infraction. If anyone is hurt, or the car is stuck in a live lane, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service.

Is it a tow, or something smaller?

Not every stop on the Beltline needs a haul. Your battery dies in the Woodland Mall lot on a cold night. The engine clicks but won't turn over. That's often a jump start, done right where you parked. No miles to a shop.

If the car ran fine and then lost power, or something broke, plan on a car tow instead. Tell us honestly what happened. A clear story gets you a price that fits the real job.

How can you keep a Beltline tow price down?

  1. Pick the drop-off before you call. Have the shop's name and address ready.
  2. Think nearby. A good shop close to where you stopped cuts the haul the most.
  3. Give a cross street. Say Fulton, Knapp, Cascade or 28th, plus your direction.
  4. Say north or south of I-96. Once the bridge work starts, that one detail matters a lot.
  5. Describe the car. Make, model, all-wheel drive or not, and how it's sitting.

How does Sentinel price a tow on East Beltline?

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company does the work. You tell us where the car is and where it should go. We text your price before dispatch, and that price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide. Then we check on you by text until your driver arrives. That's the Stay-With-You Promise. You can also track your truck on a map. For the rest of the city's roads, see our Grand Rapids towing page.

East Beltline Tow Price Questions

Why does my East Beltline tow cost more than my friend's downtown tow?

It's usually the miles. The Beltline runs along the east side, so a shop on the west side means a long haul. Pick a shop closer to where you stopped, and the price can drop.

Is East Beltline M-37 or M-44?

Both, in different parts. South of I-96 it carries M-37. North of I-96 it carries M-44. When you call, just say East Beltline and the nearest cross street.

Will the 2027 bridge closure raise my price?

It can make some trips longer. With the Beltline closed over I-96, your driver has to go around to cross it. The price we text already counts the route. Once you accept it, it won't go up unless the job changes, and then you decide.

Can I just leave my car in a Beltline turn lane overnight?

No. A car left in a lane is a danger to other drivers. And on a state route like the Beltline, Michigan law calls a car abandoned after 18 hours with a valid plate. Police can then have it towed.

Rules change, so check the official source before you rely on it. Sources: MDOT: East Beltline bridge over I-96, MDOT: West Michigan traffic center and Safety Service Patrol, MDOT: US 131 study, MCL 257.252a, MCL 257.618a, M-37 route, M-44 route.
